Older?

Probably for the last year I've been toying with blogging again. I think my main put off was the fact I barely go on my laptop, so could I post from my phone with posts still looking how I want them to? I even considered using wordpress but that may have posed the same dilemma. It was only this last week I realised so many bloggers have a simple design and this was probably the reason: so they could post from their mobile device (I hope). So I'm going to try blogging again.

My love for Disney has increased so I'll probably be posting more about Disney. I realise now that posts that are lists are absolutely fine so I'll do as many as I like. Overall I think I'm more knowledgeable about blogging than I was 3 years ago. So I hope you all enjoy the content I have to offer.

Hyper Japan 2014

Note: this is actually a post I should have published last year. I have quickly finished it in preparation for this year's event post lol.

So, after a while, I'm posting about my personal life again. This post is going to be about my visit to London and Hyper Japan on the 27th July, with a little bit of context too.

Just over a year ago, this Sailor Moon fan who lives in Japan tweeted about him featuring in a TV programme called Tokyo Eye on NHK World. I had never heard of this channel but by chance I found I did have it and coincidentally it was his episode of Tokyo Eye on that day. I enjoyed it and looked into other programmes on that channel and found imagine-nation which appealed to me. As I tuned in, they had a string of shows about conventions including Hyper Japan (and featured Tokyo Toys in that episode which I first visited in February this year). After watching it, I vowed to go to Hyper Japan the next year (2014).

And then we moved...I had always taken our close proximity to London for granted but after planning I found out it was still reasonably accessible. I voiced my wish to my parents and they said they'd buy transport and entry for me plus one for my 21st birthday present (and a little spending money for me). As I wasn't sure which friend to take, mum came with me. Even though mum isn't keen on London I would like to think she doesn't think it as bad as before going with me.

So we decided to go by train from Downham Market which was direct but busy being the first train to London that morning. I suddenly remembered as we arrived at King's Cross that platform 9 3/4 was there so we said we would look back at it later. We got to Hyper Japan and it was impressive. It was a good size and there was plenty of room for people to walk about in. It was probably heaven for a Japanophile but I didn't enjoy it as much probably because I was in mum's company and she wasn't a big fan.

I'm surprised I didn't buy anything for myself. Probably because I was conscious I didn't have a lot of room at home. I was also expecting more imported merchandise like Sailor Moon but I saw about 3 different products and I wasn't interested in them. But mum bought a Rilakkuma and a Batman T-shirt for my step dad. It got to lunch and the queues were massive. I wish I had tried some food but we decided to go somewhere else.
I took mum to Piccadilly as I wanted to go to Tokyo Toys again. Trocadero was shut off but you could still access the store which had moved. I bought my soft toy Luna which I wanted to buy last time :)
N.B. I found out just recently that the reason Trocadero is shut is because they are developing it into a capsule hotel.

I showed mum China town and we went to one of the restaurants for lunch before popping in a few shops and going back to King's Cross. I went to the burger bar in St. Pancras to get one of their gorgeous Belgian chocolate milkshakes, mum almost wished she had one herself but instead she helped me. We saw platform 9 3/4 and took a picture in a gap when no one was standing there as we didn't queue ourselves as it was way too long. The shop was packed too but it did look awesome. I'm sure it would be worth its while having a bigger unit.
We headed back home, pooped but happy. I would like to go to Hyper Japan again but with some other like minded fans. It might even be bigger than before then.

Best TV Theme Tunes

Sometimes the best TV theme tunes are ones you don't necessarily sing along to...but some are. Anyways here are my favourite theme tunes in no particular order.

Lost Girl
The opening credits feature a voiceover from Bo explaining her predicament...on top of the solo guitar segment from the theme song. Every time the credits roll I boogie to it. The whole theme song has a different tone to the segment used in the credits but it's still cool.

Switch - Lions in Cages by Wolf Gang
Even though the show got cancelled I'm always uplifted by this song and remember the awesomeness that was Switch. What set this show apart from others was it's tone. There were no rules with the girls' magic and they had to learn lessons for themselves. It was great fun, just like this song.

Sleepy Hollow
This theme is so Gothic like the show and right now when I don't have access to the remaining episodes of series 1 I haven't seen, I find comfort in playing the theme in my head.

Angel
The theme to Angel is a little more solemn and sad compared to its parent show Buffy. However this is because it is echoing the curse that Angel has and his battle with other monsters and himself.

X-Men Animated Series
After the first movie, this is what got me into X-Men. If it didn't have a good theme then I might not have been impressed and switched off. If it wasn't for watching an episode of this on Fox Kids then I wouldn't have caught Sailor Moon after it (wow this really changed my life).

Springwatch
Whenever this theme comes on I feel full of the joys of spring. It is so jovial and fun.

Merlin

Rupert
My Grandma loves this show and I enjoy watching it with her moreso thanks to the theme tune. I like that even though it's produced in Canada it still has that English feel about it that comes across even in the theme.

Primeval: New World
This is so different from it's parent English show and it took me a while to get used to it but I like the theme because it has that different feel.

Wolfblood
This is a fantastic theme song, I love it. The lyrics are so well written even for a teen TV show.

The Walking Dead
It is simple yet effective and it sets the tone of the show - how dark it is.

CSI: NY
I like the Who song that they used but when they remixed it, it was even better and I looked forward to watching CSI: NY because of it.

Defiance
Again, simple yet effective.

Sapphire and Steel
Ever such a short theme for a short lived TV series, it grounds its audience on the fact this is a sci-fi TV series despite the fact it doesn't always feel like it when you watch it. It also has a voiceover that basically gives you pretty much all the background about Sapphire and Steel that we know (which is exceptionally little) and the fact they've been assigned to solve the following mystery\case.

Sailor Moon - Tuxedo Mirage
OK so this isn't an opening theme but the closing theme for the third series Sailor Moon S. I've put this in here however because it is a beautiful song.

So... I like Lost Girl

This is what my post 'I Am' was in preparation for. This post has been in draft stage since I started up my blog but I came to a sudden realisation which has given me the last push to finish it and publish it. This realisation I will reveal at the end of the post.
I want to talk to you about Lost Girl which is a TV show I watch but every time I begin to talk about it I get this conversation:

Me: I like Lost Girl
Person: what's that?
Me: it's a TV show about a succubus.
Person: a what?

Every time -_-

A succubus is like a sexual demon. In a female form it has sex with people and feeds off their energy. A male form is called an Incubus.

But don't freak out. Bo, the protagonist in Lost Girl is far from a demon (atm). Her story is that she was adopted as a baby into a Christian family and all was fine until she hit puberty. She went against her parents and had sex with a guy she was dating...only to wake up in the morning to find him dead. Finding out even her kiss can kill she was cast out by her parents and ran from place to place with a new identity each time because she kept killing people. Sometimes she was just hungry and sometimes she was in love. She is lost because she doesn't know what she is and has no home. Until the day she meets Kenzi (this is when the show begins).

Bo saves Kenzi from a rapist but coz the rapist spiked Kenzi's drink, Bo takes her to where she is staying hoping to be on her way to somewhere new by the time Kenzi wakes up. Except Kenzi wakes up early and it turns out she filmed Bo doing her succubus thing to the guy. Kenzi isn't scared as such she just wants to talk to Bo. We get this cute scene in a milkshake bar where Kenzi writes on a napkin a multiple choice question for Bo to answer because it would be weird to say it out loud: "I am...a) a demon, b) an alien" but Bo doesn't have an answer to that. When the bill comes up Bo shows how she can make the waitress seriously attracted to her so they don't pay. But as they are leaving, in an alley two cops turn up. One knocks them both out with his siren whistle and they take Bo!
Bo is taken to a nice manor of sorts where another guy called 'the Ash' questions her about killing on their territory and whether she is light or dark and loads of other stuff she hasn't a clue about. Then the other guy who abducted her threatens her and growls while baring his animal teeth! A woman walks in with her goons demanding the same things off Bo but the other guys aren't having any of it. Turns out the Ash is the leader of the light fae and the woman is the Morrigan, leader of the dark fae. Fae are creatures like we know from mythology and folklore. A lot of them blend in to society (this shows makes a lot of them able to do this) but some, called under fae, don't. After some tests by a human female doctor for the fae, everyone finds out Bo is a succubus. But all fae are aligned with either dark or light, but Bo being under the radar hasn't got a side.
They make Bo do this really old challenge. If she kills two under fae then they'll let her pick a side. Meanwhile Kenzi wakes up and uses her contacts to find where Bo is. Bo easily defeats the giant under fae with a little hint from Dyson (the cop who isn't a siren) but struggles with the other under fae - a pain eater. Kenzi fortunately finds her and tries to get to her but she is held back. Bo stills hears her voice though and breaks free. Challenge over Bo decides to pick the side of humans, making her known as the infamous unaligned succubus to the rest of fae-dom. So we then see her and Kenzi solving crimes committed by fae sometimes for a client and sometimes for the cops. Because she is unaligned she can mingle with both light and dark and step into both territories.

Throughout the show we see plenty of character development, especially for Bo trying to find out who her parents are, managing her love life and her increasingly growing power.

The main characters we have (from left to right are):

Trick - he is the bartender of the local way station who is very knowledgeable but also very mysterious, he has secrets constantly seeping out.

Hale - the siren who is a fae cop. He is very laid back and is of fae noble blood but he doesn't like his family. He always plays sidekick with Kenzi as Bo and Dyson do their own thing.

Dyson - he is a wolf-shifter and Bo's love interest, though he is usually competing with Lauren. He is another fae cop and works with Hale.

Bo - already explained her. She loves both Dyson and Lauren.

Kenzi - street smart and a survivor. She would do anything for Bo and always stands by her even though she is considered second class among many fae because she is human.

Lauren - the human doctor who works for the light fae. She is also Bo's love interest but also has secrets.

We also get introduced to other prominent characters one of my guilty favourites is Vex. He is a dark fae Mesmer which means he can control people like a puppet with his hands. When we first meet him I didn't like him but he grew on me. He's like Russell Brand but better. He still can make me go eww though, especially when he dresses up.

Then in season 3 we are introduced to Tamsin who is a Valkyrie. It is hard to explain her character as it changes so much but she is awesome and played by a Christian actress so I like her very much.

This show is underrated and fantastic. I find it the perfect show to chill out to and the characters are so good. I often don't mind telling people I like Lost Girl but hardly anybody knows what it is about. There is a little shame I have from liking it being a Christian but I realised the other day that it is really no worse than Game of Thrones which is far more explicit yet so popular, I even know some Christians who like and watch that. There should be no shame from liking a TV show or film that is explicit if it has quality writing which I believe both Lost Girl and Game of Thrones have. Lost Girl is in no way slutty, it is written too well to be that.

Cathy's Book et al

First of all just take a look at the first edition cover.

This is what first attracted me to this book. I know people aren't meant to judge a book by its cover but I always do that with book as they help to set the tone of the story. The fact that it is hardback is because it is used to hold the evidence for the story. Yes you heard me right I said EVIDENCE! How freaking cool is that?

So as you might have guessed by now the Cathy books are mysteries. Cathy is an average girl living with her mum who is a night nurse so they hardly interact. She likes her art, as you can tell from the illustrations, and her best friend is a computer whizz called Emma. When drawing one day she meets Victor who she is really attracted to and they date for a while but one day he breaks up with her then disappears. She takes it upon herself to find him but she gets caught up in things way over her head. Things she really didn't want to know not only about Victor but also about her dead father are unearthed. I didn't see the direction this mystery was going in right until the end. Even the following books in the trilogy, Cathy's Key and Cathy's Ring, dish out surprises.

The books are also interactive, not that I've tried it because it's American produced, and you can ring up the numbers and check out Emma's website. The websites for the books are quite cool too, though they might give away some plot details, and you can do an interactive mystery with Cathy herself through the website and using your email, though again do it after you have read all the books. The books don't take too long to read especially the last one which wraps everything up.
One of my favourite things is that the books spawned a song sung by Cathy herself called Lost (Cathy's Song). I really love it and you can listen to the song without it giving away anything but the video to it might give some details away.

Eurovision: Soundtrack to my Life

Since 2009, I started enjoying and watching the Eurovision Song Contest. I'd seen it in passing before but didn't really appreciate it for what it was. Since Dad moved to Sweden I've enjoyed the cultural exchange and my brother was listening to Swedish music, therefore we enjoyed the European music of Eurovision. It has helped me to be more adventurous in my music tastes too. So as the next contest is on Saturday I thought I would share with you my favourite songs between 2009 and 2013. For a contest which rolls out between 26 and 30 songs every year it's very difficult to narrow it down to a certain number of favourites. So I'm afraid it's a top 25...

  1. Shine - Natalia Kelly (Austria 2013) Didn't qualify for the final but an AMAZING song.
  2. Ljubav je svuda (English: Love is All Around) - Moje 3 (Serbia 2013) Didn't qualify for the final but an AMAZING song.
  3. Only Teardrops - Emmelie de Forest (Denmark 2013)
  4. Angel in Disguise - Musiqq (Latvia 2011) Didn't qualify for the final but an AMAZING song.
  5. Crno I belo (English: Black and White) - Kaliopi (Macedonia 2012)
  6. Constigo Hasta el Final - EDSM (Spain 2013)
  7. I Feed You My Love - Margaret Berger (Norway 2013)
  8. Aphrodisiac - Eleftheria Eleftheriou (Greece 2012)
  9. Get You - Alexej Vorobjov (Russia 2011)
  10. Gravity - Zlata Ognevich (Ukraine 2013)
  11. Rockefeller Street - Getter Jaani (Estonia 2011)
  12. Satellite - Lena Meyer-Landrut (Germany 2010)
  13. Love in Rewind - Dino Merlin (Bosnia and Herzegovina 2011)
  14. OPA - Giorgos Alkaios and Friends (Greece 2010)
  15. Something - Andrius Pojavis (Lithuania 2013)
  16. Euphoria - Loreen (Sweden 2012)
  17. La Noche es Para mi - Soraya Arnelas (Spain 2009)
  18. This is Our Night - Sakis Rouvas (Greece 2009)
  19. The Balkan Girls - Elena (Romania 2009)
  20. Drip Drop - Safura (Azerbaijan 2010)
  21. Na inat - Poli Genova (Bulgaria 2011)
  22. What About my Dreams - Kati Wolf (Hungary 2011)
  23. Run Away - Sunstroke Project and Olia Tira (Moldova 2010) Saxophone guy!
  24. Igranka - Who See (Montenegro 2013) Not one that I would usually listen to but I like it. It didn't qualify for the final.
  25. Hero - Charlotte Perrelli (Sweden 2008) OK so this one sneaked in because my brother liked it and I found he had it and liked it myself.

And here are the top 5 in case you would like to listen :)

The scariest Doctor Who story?

Since the series started up again in 2005, Doctor Who has dished out many a scary monster and episode in the bid to scare the youngsters of today. Some are classics pulled from the older stories like Daleks, Cybermen and Zygons. Others are new inventions like the Weeping Angels and the Silents. I believe it must be easier to put an older monster into a new episode if that monster appeared on Earth because clearly it travels or is found on Earth where the majority of episodes are based. One exception is the Macra who reappeared in 'Gridlock' thanks to some good writing. It was surprising because even though they are distinct, they didn't exactly make a lasting impression (but that could be because its first appearance in Doctor Who is lost).
What I am trying to say is unless it is very distinct, appeared in more than one story or appeared on Earth the likelihood of you meeting any other monster from the older series is very slim. The only way will be to watch the original story they were in.
Now I'm not discrediting the Weeping Angels or Silents, but I think their reappearances have made us too familiar with them. We remember they are scary but we are not so scared by them any more. Imagine how terrified of the Weeping Angels we would still be if they had only appeared in 'Blink'.
So for my scariest Doctor Who story I am harking back to a Third Doctor story called 'Death to the Daleks'. "Daleks" I hear you say, "we've had them silly". But I'm not talking about the Daleks. The title is 'DEATH to the Daleks' and I'll give you a clue...it is not the Doctor's doing. I think it is a simple principal. Something that is a threat to the Daleks is something to be feared. We have learnt in the new series that in actual fact, the Doctor is someone to be feared. So this leads me on to Exxilon.
Some people wonder how the Egyptians built the pyramids but are now a third world country. This is what happened to Exxilon but far more sinister. The native Exxilons built a living city but it became powerful, draining energy from everything for itself and its creators worshipped it. The natives make sacrifices to this city in the form of any trespassers which is common because the city drains energy from passing ships. The natives clothing can also help them camouflage as rocks on their barren planet. The city has a number of defence mechanisms too. It's rooted itself to the planet and...well see for yourself...

As a last resort to defend itself inside the city, it creates 'anti bodies' that look like this:

Reminiscent of the recent Time Zombies right?

So you have not only the Doctor but the Daleks too, both quite vulnerable, battling this planet. Why don't you take a look at the DVD trailer:

Out of all the stories I watched when I was little that scared me, this is the only one which has the exact same effect now. Even Horror Channel chose to show it for their selection of Doctor Who stories they are showing. I think the Third and early Fourth Doctors had the scariest episodes mainly because of who was behind the scenes. Phillip Hinchcliffe wanted a Gothic approach to the Fourth Doctors stories and Barry Letts wanted people to be scared of everyday objects (like Moffat does) and the Earth and it's politics. Horror Channel has picked out a majority of these stories to show on their channel for these reasons. Scary Doctor Who can be good.

P.S. this story is one of Nicholas Briggs' (current voice of the Daleks, Cybermen, etc.) favourites.
